Mecklenburg's HOMES Grant Is Open — Up to $1204 Off Your Property Taxes

If rising property taxes have been weighing on you, there's real help available right here in Mecklenburg County — and the application window just opened.

The HOMES program (Helping Out Mecklenburg's homeowners with Economic Support) is a county grant built to help qualifying homeowners with low-to-moderate income stay in the homes they've worked so hard to keep. The grant is applied directly to your property tax bill, so it's not a loan and there's nothing to pay back.

What you could receive

Qualifying homeowners can receive a grant worth 35% of their Mecklenburg County tax amount on the 2026 tax bill, up to a maximum of $650. If you live in the Town of Davidson, you may qualify for an additional grant on top of that. Funds are awarded first-come, first-served until they run out — so it pays to apply early.

Who qualifies

You may be eligible if:

• Your home is in Mecklenburg County and has been your primary residence for the past three consecutive years

• Your name is on the recorded deed, title, or life estate

• Your household income is at or below 80% of the area median income (set by HUD, based on family size)

• You have no more than one delinquent tax bill in the past three years and don't owe prior-year property taxes

• You're not already enrolled in certain other tax-relief programs

There's no age requirement, your home doesn't have to be paid off, and homeowners whose taxes are paid through escrow may still qualify. Recipients do need to reapply each year.

Key dates

Applications open July 1, 2026. Because funding is limited and awarded in the order applications come in, getting yours in early gives you the best shot.
